Volleyball St. Lucia and West Coast Volleyball teamed up on Sunday 12th December, 2021 to bring to the west coast community some exciting volleyball action in a 3×3 invitational beach volleyball tournament.
The tournament which was part of Volleyball St. Lucia’s “Return to Action Series”, saw the participation of twelve teams from around the island , which included some of St. Lucia’s top national volleyball players.
Mr Shayne Felicien, president of Volleyball St. Lucia, felt that it was necessary to support the work of a team of enthusiastic volleyball players from Anse la Raye, who had approached the association for some support in bringing the sport of volleyball to Anse la Raye.
According to Felicien, ” Anse la Raye has been worked with to develop their beach programme for the past two years. We decided that after two years, it was important to showcase what has happened in Anse la Raye. We are actually showcasing the venue, that can actually hold a sustainable tournament.”
The Anse la Raye Beach Volleyball Court is situated right on the beach in Anse la Raye, where spectators can enjoy volleyball as well as the magnificent scenery of, sky, green hills and sea.
So, what is in store for the future of volleyball in Anse la Raye? Felicien believes that the possibilities are endless, although there is some work to be done on the court itself, such as preventing erosion of the beach during high tide and replacement of the court’s coarse sand with white sand.
Prospects for volleyball include the forming of an affiliate team in Anse la Raye, volleyball programmes in the nearby schools and also volleyball being a part of the tourism offering when visitors come to Anse la Raye. Felicien also sees much economic benefit to be derived.
It is expected that this tournament will be an annual December feature on the calendar of the volleyball association.
Marcus Edward who is one of the organizers says that he is thrilled with what has happened and he sees it as a way of getting the young people engaged.
Team Hustlers won the tournament, with Latecomers and Sand Storms coming in second and third respectively.
Volleyball action takes place everyday on the beach facility. So feel free to stop by and become a part of the thrill and excitement that takes place there. If you would like to support the project in any way feel free to use this medium to reach out to the organizers.
